Very few people understand me.
Those who know me well are aware that I love pizza, hate willful ignorance, and weep like an infant during inappropriate moments, such as watching Doctor Who. Those who THINK they know me well, probably recognize my public persona. That Brian makes himself out to be a hard drinker, slightly misogynistic, and obsessed with writing. Well, That Brian is like the real one ... just with a few traits amped up for humorous effect.
But while the real Brian would go toe-to-toe with anyone over philosophical differences, the online one rarely indulges in those discussions. Nor does he argue religion, one way or the other, nor does he get into political arguments. Well, the last item IS a weakness of mine ... however, I am careful to insult ALL political beliefs. I am nothing if not fair. While there's no point in living a lie to appeal to a wider audience, there's also no percentage in riling up your readership, potential or otherwise, to show how gosh-darned right you can be.
Sure, you might want to be the "bad boy/girl" of writing and see how many points you can make while not giving a rip about your audience's feelings or values. But is it worth offending someone to lose a potential sale? My guess is no. Save your controversies for the written page. You can still be fun, even be as close to the real you as possible, but no one really, truly needs to know how you think, unless it's about writing.
