Novel Writing Made Less Impossible -- Don't Stop Now (and Why You Won't Want To)

Yeah, it's the holidays. Yeah, there's a lot to do and people to see. Yeah, there's a lot of demands on your time.

Big hairy deal.

Stephen King once told an interviewer that he wrote every day except his birthday and the Fourth of July. He later confessed that to be a lie. He wrote every day.

And look where Stephen King is today. I'm pretty sure there's a corollary there.

If you want something badly enough, you'll work to get it. In writing, that's the ONLY way you'll get published/famous/paid.

From all the years that I did interview transcriptions, I had to do it in a pretty sterile environment of near-complete silence so as to catch every throat-clearing, every cough, every "you know," every little sound that should or shouldn't be typed for posterity. Now, I'm used to having things pretty quiet when I write, so I can hear the voices in my head more clearly.

Of course, your mileage may vary. A lot of my writing/drawing/generally creative friends like to have music playing in the background, or the television, or radio, or some kind of noise. I find it a distraction, but you have to find the environment that works for you.

Still, every now and then, I'll find myself writing while watching a video. Or sometimes, I'll write while eating or just having coffee on the porch.

In other words, don't be afraid to multitask (but when you get to editing, do that under optimal conditions where you'll encounter minimal distractions for maximum results). While I recommend setting aside time to do nothing but write, it's okay to write when you can find the time. If you can't miss your fave TV show, you can still write during the program. Yes, you may consider yourself having permission.

The goal is to get the writing done, whatever it takes. So as a wise man once ... well, repeatedly said, "GIT 'R' DONE!"
