Novel Writing Made Less Impossible Okay, You Have One Last Chance To Back Out ...

Okay, you've got most of what you'll probably need to get your head into the space where your inner creator needs to be. You're probably eagerly awaiting the information that's going to actually typing something with purpose, not just staring blankly at the monitor.

And now here's the kicker ... the last chance to give this up and enthusiastically embrace your writer wannabe status ... the part where you give up and not only hug your inner loser, but kiss it on the lips and buy it dinner. However, you need to know some things before you press on, assuming you are obsessed with writing and publishing your book.

You Will Lose Friends

When I began promoting my first book, Bloodshot: The Coldest Warrior, my friends list on Facebook shrank by about 5%. After that, I started receiving PMs from so-called friends who asked why I was blowing up their newsfeeds with my promotions and why couldn't I just post about fun things and not try to sell my work. So I replied by cutting them from my friends roster.

This is your business and your real friend will understand. They might even support you with either encouragement or sales. You don't need those others.

Your "Well Intentioned" Friends Will Try To Talk You Out Of This

"You'll never be as big as [insert name of Big Name Bestselling Author]." "You don't want to embarrass yourself." "You can't get rich doing this." "[insert name of distant acquaintance or total stranger] tried this twenty years ago and they wound up with a garage filled with their book." "It's a lot of hard work."

So why is the barometer for success the person who's the tops in that particular field. That's like saying you shouldn't study to be a cardiologist because you'll never be Christian Bernard.

If you've got the stones to put your work out there for consideration, whether it's to an editor with a publishing house or for you to sell directly as a self-publisher, then there's little to be embarrassed about if you've done all you can to make your product look and read its best.

No, chances are you won't become wealthy as a writer. But you could make some extra spending cash, gain a whole new set of supportive friends, and you are IMMORTAL. Your book could very well live on long after you've passed this mortal coil.

The publishing landscape isn't the same as it was fifty years ago or even twenty or ten years ago. Because of changing reading tastes, wavering literacy levels, and ongoing forward leaps in technology, the field of publishing evolves rapidly. What didn't work then now works wonderfully.

It's only that last line that proves true. This isn't a vocation for the weak. But the rewards, both tangible and otherwise are worth the struggle.

And Now Here's The Truth ...

The writing field is not easy. But it's easier if done one step at a time.

The rewards will come as fast as you work towards them and eventually, if you do this correctly, you will be rewarded even when you pause for a breather.

You will meet the coolest people you could imagine, both in the writing field and from outside.

The right people will respect you.

You will constantly be surprised by the amount of support that's out there. And the more you share of your own knowledge, the more you will receive.

And most of all ... it's worth it. So let's get started. Next week.
